With a population of over 4500 people, much of Whitchurch is a designated Conservation Area. The amount of wildlife in and around the River Test led to it becoming a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Whitchurch is a rapidly growing town with a combination of residential areas, industry and services. The town boasts a very active amateur theatre group called WADS, an annual beer festival rub by CAMRA, and in 2010 the town ranked first in the BT “Race to Infinity” competition, which meant the residents would be one of the first ten rural areas in Britain to upgrade to fiber-optic broadband.

The Libertines & Dirty Pretty Things guitarist and vocalist Carl Barât grew up in Whitchurch and Actor Leslie Schofield, famous for playing Chief Bast in Star Wars Episode IV lived in Whitchurch.

Whitchurch is also the site of the annual Hampshire Potato Day, which takes place on the last full weekend of January. Gardeners from across the South of England arrive in droves, searching for rare seed potatoes.
