Alton is a civil parish and market town located in Hampshire, England. Located on the River Wey, it has a population of over 17,000 people and is twinned with Pertuis, France and Montecchio Maggiore, Italy.
Alton is famous for being the place that Georgian novelist Jane Austen wrote six of her novels. She lived in Chawton, just outside Alton, until her death in 1809. Alison Goldfrapp, lead vocalist of the electronic group Goldfrapp and Alan Titchmarsh are among the more recent notable Alton citizens.
Attractions in Alton include the Palace Cinema, which has shown films seven days a week since 1932, the Alton Library, and the Curtis Museum. Alton also has a Sport’s Centre that includes a swimming pool, gym, and indoor and outdoor courts.
Historically, Alton was renonwed for its brewing. Hops and Barley were grown in the surrounding areas and the barley would have been malted in town. The Coors Brewing Company, which produces Grolsh, Worthington and Carling, still has a brewery in Alton.
